Element Creative

Meet Element Creative, a Dorset-based agency specialising in design and engineering across a broad spectrum of industry. In this exclusive interview, we delve into their insights on sustainability and their dynamic residency at the AUB Innovation Studio.

In a world where creativity and technology collide, Element Creative stands out as a force of innovation. Founded in 2020, Element Creative are carving their own path in product design, offering services in a wide range of industries, from camping gear to marine design, pest control, and consumer goods. The heart of their business lies in the creative process, where they support their clients from the initial research phase through the development process, fostering a vision of sustainable and empathetic design.

Element Creative was born out of a desire to break free from the constraints of the corporate world. Co-founders Andy and Paul, both having spent over a decade in a global engineering organisation, yearned to create something small, agile, and aligned with their vision. They took the plunge, drawing from their accumulated knowledge and experience. Element Creative's journey began with a focus on the marine industry, reflecting their historical background, but the duo harboured aspirations to explore a multitude of industries.“We wanted to be in charge of our own destiny,” explains Andy.

Andy and Paul's team expanded with the addition of industrial designer Niall, driven by a shared passion for shaping forward-thinking products. Their philosophy extends beyond superficial marketing, concentrating on fostering genuine and impactful sustainability practices. “We wanted to work with clients whose values aligned with ours,’ says Paul. Notably, their roster of clients has included startups committed to reviving the maritime industry, enabling them to pioneer eco-conscious solutions.“Since I’ve started here everything I’ve worked on I’ve been proud of” adds Niall, “We have clients that allow us to have real freedom with what we’re doing, and that adds value both ways.”

As the company grew, Andy and Paul soon discovered AUB Innovation Studio, a local innovation hub that opened its doors to businesses like theirs. This was a game-changer for Element Creative, providing them with access to state-of-the-art equipment, inspiring facilities, and a collaborative ecosystem. “We have VR headsets, GoPros, and textile facilities here," says Andy, "this has allowed us to prototype, experiment, and bring new ideas to life.”

The studio's connection to full-time university research teams has been instrumental in addressing environmental concerns and selecting eco-friendly materials. The physical space, equipped with innovative technology, serves as an inspiring venue to meet with clients, foster creativity, and grow their business.

The Element Creative team also values the collaborative aspect of the studio, which provides opportunities to connect with fellow businesses, share knowledge, and engage in workshops and seminars. “There’s a great local network of people here” says Paul, “We’re building a relationship with the industry.” Networking, as Element Creative has discovered, can be a powerful catalyst for growth. The studio's community of businesses has enabled them to learn from others who have traversed the startup phase, minimising the isolation often felt by small teams.

The AUB Innovation Studio recognises the need to continually evolve and adapt. Beyond the technological resources, the studio aims to be a hub for innovation and research, a place where talent remains in the region. By fostering a dialogue with its residents, the studio seeks to become a world-leading research and development centre, offering expertise and guidance beyond just equipment. Its goal is to create a gravitational pull that attracts talent and generates new outcomes through a shared commitment to creativity and innovation.

Element Creative and the AUB Innovation Studio are on a remarkable journey, promising to shape the future of product design, sustainable practices, and creative collaboration. Together, they reshape tomorrow.
