Pier Pioneers Fund
At Pier, we’re more than a magazine. We’re here to nurture and celebrate creativity and community and that’s why we launched our Pier Pioneers Fund. It’s a pot of money created with a cut of any profits from our events - including our pub quiz - and donations from our community that we use to provide micro grants to local creatives.
Who we’re looking for
We want to support passionate people across Dorset who want to create something special for the community. Whether it’s an exhibition you’re looking to put on, a zine you want to launch or a gig you need to pay a sound engineer for, we want to hear your ideas and help you bring them to life. We’re looking for fully formed ideas which need a little bit of funding and some promotion to help them fly.
Our role
We aim to support at least five projects a year with a one-off payment of between £50 and £250 to support the development of an event, product or project that fits with Pier’s commitment to nurturing and celebrating community and creativity.
As well as this financial support, you’ll receive promotion via Pier’s digital channels and - if timings and themes align - the printed journal too. You’ll also have a sounding board in our experienced team of volunteers.
Apply for funding
If you are over 18, live in Dorset and are interested in becoming a Pier Pioneer, please complete this online form. We review applications on a rolling basis and award micro grants quarterly to coincide with the launch of the printed journals.
We are run by a small team of volunteers so please bear with us for a response. If you haven’t heard from us within 6 weeks of submitting your idea, please drop us a line at laura@pierjournal.co.uk
You are welcome to submit separate applications for different projects at different times, but if you have not been successful for a particular pitch, please do not pitch the same idea again.
Good luck!
What we’ve funded
-
Seagull Magazine
When a talented group of design students from AUB came to use and said we’d inspired them to launch their own magazine, we knew we had to support them with funding and advice - so that’s exactly what we did!
-
Bournemouth gig guide
There’s only so many gigs we can promote in our quarterly magazine so we’ve teamed up with our friends at Rock Regeneration to launch a monthly printed gig guide for the Bournemouth area - first edition due out in Oct 2025.
-
Two Fat Melons Quiz
Our readers have been calling for a pub quiz for a while so we worked with Becky Hougham to bring her sell out quiz to Patch in July 2025 putting the ‘fun’ into fundraising - fuelling this very Pier Pioneers pot in the process.
